So good to see you on camera here, after so long not following you or The Refuge much. Good to hear of the vitality of your community and ministry. And so sorry for both the tragedy in Boulder and shooting of the nearby neighbor. Prayers with you all.
You spoke of the 19 years and evolution of The Refuge. It still sounds almost unique in my exposure.
Whatever has happened with your long-time co-pastor (since I've not followed much for a long time, I'm not current re. him), it was so encouraging that you could co-lead and love each other, etc., in the midst of real theological differences.
That's an arena I've gotten deeper into myself, though in mainly one angle on it in a formal "mission" sense... I refer to the CompassionateCitizens.us (Foundation)... still tiny but connecting with many key org leaders and others, both religious and secular. Our mission involves depolarization (culturally AND politically) and an "ecumenical path to deliberative
democracy".
Put another way, it's a transpartisan approach to replacing our two-party plutocracy with a much more functional (perhaps multi-party but non-polarizing) form of democracy with real accountability and a voice for all perspectives, in which the "wisdom of the common good" can emerge and be implemented.
Anyway, in the process, over nearly 8 years, and especially the last 2 to 3, I've been connecting with folks and learning about related efforts, various creation care endeavors by churches and non-profits, and much more.
I'm 11 years behind your mom, and hope to be still "on mission" at her age... bless her, you, and all the biological and broader family.... Yes, we need to stay connected all the more now, and "keep the faith"!
so great to hear from you, howard! it’s been a long time. so much has changed at the refuge since 2016 and we’ve really evolved into an eclectic community center and it’s really beautiful. you can read more about what life’s like here now at therefugeonline.org. thanks for sharing more about your work and CompassionateCitizens.us—such good stuff. love and courage from colorado today (sorry for my late response)
Your lifetime achievement award is a big deal. So proud of you. 💕
